It never fails, every year, we get the call around the first week in November from a clients that wants to completely renovate their kitchen. When asked what their expected timetable is for completion, the response is usually “we would really like to have the project completed by Thanksgiving!”
Keeping in mind that paint realistically has a 30 day cure time, it is never a good idea to rush in to this kind of project. Careful planning and understanding of your objectives and budget for achieving your dream space is crucial and takes time.
Refinishing your kitchen space is more than just picking a paint color or finish. There are many other decisions that may need to be made before you can get to that point. Many of the kitchen projects that we do may include refurbishing or adding to existing cabinetry, new appliances, countertops, flooring, etc. It is our job to guide and educate each client on all of the possibilities.
It is amazing how adding new crown or trim will give your old kitchen cabinets a really custom look. Here is just a few examples of how we can take plain cabinetry to the next level:
Add trim and corbels….
Add panels and architectural details like legs
Add molding and detail to blank sides
As far as the process, we always tell clients to start with an inspiration piece or picture. It could be as simple as a piece of fabric, a picture from a magazine or from sites such as HOUZZ or Pinterest. This gives us direction and understanding of the client’s vision and palette of color for THEIR space. Don’t start with adesired paint color. We encourage the selection of countertops and backsplash first. If a client has existing countertops or backsplash that are not changing, these in large part will dictate the palette of colors and finishes for the cabinetry and walls. Remember, paint can be tinted to any color. Once you select a countertop that is an element where its color cannot be “tweaked” once it is installed!
With so many options, it is important to hire a qualified company to execute each phase of the project. One individual cannot be an expert in all areas. I love the other designers, contractors and artisans that I work with on these projects. We are individual professionals that specialize on our field of work but work together as a great team.
