As experts in the field, we like to keep up with industry talk on social media! Lately we’ve been seeing a lot of issues people are having, whether it’s paint not adhering to surfaces, bleeding through and questions referring to proper prep. Here’s a few things to keep in mind.
- There are no shortcuts when it comes to refinishing furniture and cabinetry! “No priming needed” and “Will stick to any surface” works in some scenarios, but not all. A lot of DIYers and students stop there, when in reality there’s fine print! There are ways to prevent flaking and bubbling, it just takes some knowledge first!
- Knowing what is on the surface of what you’re about to paint is important. Is the surface waxed? Does it have oil soap? Is the previous paint stable?
- While prep does take awhile, it’s definitely worth it. We spend hours sanding, cleaning and prepping before a drop of primer or paint touches a surface! We find that minor prep can lead to unwanted results, so while it’s time consuming, it’ll last in the long run!
There is so much information on refinishing, and we encourage our DIYers and students to read and understand about the products they use! Know what the advantages and limitations are of those products, and consult a professional in the field or a manufacturers’ representative. There are so many great products out there, just remember that your pretty finish is only as durable and long lasting as the substrate on which you start!
